Car accidents are a major source of injury and death in the United States. The National Traffic Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in 2012, an estimated 2.36 million people were injured in auto collisions, and 33,561 lost their lives in fatal crashes.
The most common types of car accidents, include:
- Rear-end collisions: Rear-end collisions occur when a vehicle crashes into the vehicle in the front of it. These are frequently caused by driver distraction, tailgating, and panic stops. People often experience whiplash injuries, but in cases involving high speeds, herniation and permanent injuries can occur.
- Intersection collisions: Crashes at intersections are very common, and are particularly dangerous when high speeds are involved. Intersection collisions involve side-impact crashes, which can be fatal for passengers seated close the part of the car that is struck.
- Head-on- collisions: These occur when the front end of two vehicles collide. Head-on-collisions are particularly dangerous because of the speed involved when the collision occurs. The typical cause of a head-on-collision is when one vehicle strays into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
- Running off the road and hitting an object: Single-vehicle collisions have similar causes to head-on-collisions. Causes include driver distraction, fatigued driving, drunk driving, speeding, and swerving to avoid an animal or an object in the road.
